HONKIE TRAIN WRECK
AVERTED AT STUDIO JOE
Photos from August 28 Stax Records 50th Anniversary party
It took 4 shots just to cover the whole band as they played "Mustang
Sally"
Left to right: Steve Smith on Cornet, R.David Lewis on sax, Walter
Henderson (nearly invisible beyond R.David) on trumpet, Carlos Summers
on trombone, Steve Boone (in dark red shirt) on electric guitar, Mike
Dollins (black
shirt) on another electric, Lem Tubbs (with his back to the camera) on
acoustic guitar, Ted Williams (standing, in lt. blue shirt), Greg Jones
seated at drums, Dennis James (red shirt)
and Ted Thorsen (black shirt) standing and singing, Kirk Ray standing
at mixed percussion, and Gene Reid on bass.
Of course it was loud. With cornet & trumpet, a
trombone, a tenor
sax,
two Stratocasters, keyboard, two drummers and 3 more guitars it couldn't
be anything else!
My name is Ted Thorsen. My friends and band
mates call me "Teddy B." I'm the tall, blond-headed guy who
did lead
vocals on Mustang Sally last nite. I had a blast.
Please tell
everyone involved that I had a great time playing with them and
listening to them play. I play drums and sing in the Mike
Dollins
Band. Mike is the guy who played lead strat guitar last nite
and who
wore the vintage looking, black and white "daddy-o" shirt and
Kanga hat
worn backwards. Again, kudos to everyone
involved...especially my good
friend Dennis James who was responsible for putting this whole,
wonderful event together, and to Doctor Rob Barrow who made it all
possible by letting us all use his
wonderful coffee house as a great venue. I hope he had as
much fun as
we did and perhaps will see to it to let us and/or other local
musicians do something like this again in the future.

The wonderful
surprise ofd the
evening was the appearance of Al Bell, founder of Stax record.
His wife had spotted the listing in the
Arkansas
Democrat-Gazette Events Calendar about the party, and had pointed it
out to her husband.
Keith Caviness and Robert O'Bryant are behind the sofa; with Rose Moore
seated next to Al Bell |
If out-of-shape
middle-aged
white GUYS
can have this much fun
with R&B, so can their
ladies!
The gentleman is Clay Moore, with Mary Weindorf in yellow beyond him.
Anne Pace and Sally Ederington are beyond Mary.
