My 2005 Christmas Tree

Here's the whole tree:

I made the tree-quilt the first Christmas we were in this apartment. Our previous house-size tree had needed discarding when we moved out of the house, and once we got the furniture (more or less all) crammed into the apartment, it was obvious that we did not have space for a three-dimensional tree.  So I made a quilt.
If I do another one, I'm not going to have the background quite that varied and much paler.

I've been accumulating, as I said in my response to LJ user Singlemaltsilk's announcement of this group, handmade ornaments ever since Morris and I got married in 1968.  That first year, we got a small organic tree, and I made a batch of sugar cookies, wrapped them in plastic wrap, and hung them on the tree using paper clips. At this range of time, I don't recall whether we eventually ate the cookies or whether we decided that they were stale by the time the tree came down.  The next year, though, I had the recipe for that flour/salt craft dough, and made a bunch of permanent cookies, decorated with acrylic paints. I've even still got several of them, though not on this year's tree.

Since then (aside from the lights), I've ONLY used handmade ornaments on my trees, except after Sharon was born she was given some commercially-made/engraved ornaments by various relatives. Not all of the ornaments were made by me (or Sharon); I started buying them at craft fairs after a while, and some I even found in convention dealer rooms.

This is this year's ornament.
Yes, that is THAT woodpecker.
The background is a 4" diamond, made as a miniature quilt and quilted with shaded embroidery thread. The bird is applique'd using WonderUnder(TM) heat fusing web. The glittery dots (including the bird's eye) are done with glittery fabric paints that come in squeeze bottles.

This lot are craft fair finds. The wood ones are quite recent; last two or three years; the angel and the goose I don't recall where or when.

This guy is also from a craft fair. He's got a brother; I forget just now if he's green or red.  I also forget which year he joined us.

One year Sharon wanted to make plastic-canvas needlework ornaments. This is one of the ones I did. Early 1990's as best I recall.

One of mine. Christmassy-print fabric glued onto foam board (the back is a plain gold lame) and cut out with a sharp blade. Silver cord glued around the edges and tied to make the hanging loop. This one dates from the time I was working at Hancock Fabrics, approximately 1997

I made the angel on the right. In fact, I made six off this pattern, as I recall. I don't recall WHEN, though.

The angel on the left came, I think, tied on a package. I certainly don't recall buying her, and I CERTAINLY did not make her!

Another of mine. Who SAYS that crocheted snowflakes have to be solid white?  Sometime in the early 1970's, I think.

This one came from fandom. Gwen Zak, back in the time when she was Gwen Moore, made a bunch of scrollsaw-cut roundels and I BOUGHT a bunch of them, over several years. This has to be from the early 1980's, because I recall commissioning a rocking-unicorn for Sharon when she was born, and that was 1984

dang! This one is OLD. Sometime from the early 1970's. I made a batch of varied ones of felt, decorated with sequins and beads.
